From an Interview with Akin Akinozu
You're very popular, but you do not have many interviews. Even though you have over 3 million followers on social media, you do not post so often. Why?
I choose to have a balanced and distant stance. Sometimes it creates the perception that I’m mysterious. However, my goal is to reflect my true self. ‘Game of Thrones’, said in an interview that “when we watched Marlon Brando in the movies we believed the character he played because there was no social media during that time. Knowing nothing about an actor helps them in their work”. Now, you see a post on Instagram the day before the show and it becomes very hard for the viewer to believe the character you are playing. Sometimes social media loses its function and becomes a purpose. In fact, we are living for it. That’s why I keep my distance.
Can you tell about yourself?
I am 31 years old and I’m an only child. My mother is a conservatory graduate and she is more focused on dubbing than acting. My mother used to voice the female lead roles in most of the foreign series that TRT broadcasted. My father was a government official. During Ecevit’s reign, he served as vice president of privatisation and adviser to the prime minister. Then he started to work in the private sector. Now he is resting and working on a script.
Why did you study math?
Because I enjoyed solving problems. I loved physics during high school, after a while, geometry came into my blood and I found myself in mathematics. I decided to study math while I was thinking about what would keep me alive in my college field. I studied at Wisconsin University for one year and after than, I went to Santa Monica College. I was transferred to UC Berkeley and studied applied mathematics there.
Why did you started acting?
When I was studying at Berkeley, I started to question what I really wanted. Away from the external voices, I was able to make the inquiries about ‘what do I really want’. I thought about my possible post-applied math jobs. One of them was investment banking, and it did not excite me at all. Meanwhile, I was also interested in art thanks to some elective courses I took. I realized that there was mathematics in the art and there were problems to be solved. I was very excited about solving these problems which required mental, spiritual, emotional and physical effort.
How did your parents reacted?
I said my decision to my father through Skype. And he just quit the conversation.
How did you persuade him?
Over time, he accepted it. In fact, looking back now, I agree with him. He feared that it might be a decision taken on a moment of enthusiasm. But, I was certain about my decision. When I was able to stand firm in front of my father, it gave me the strength to stand decisive in front of everyone. The day I passed my father’s test, I removed all obstacles in front of me and won my most trusted mentor in my life.
How did you start acting?
After returning to Turkey, I came to Istanbul. I know Ipek Bilgin for a long time. I took acting lessons at Craft Atolye for a while. During that time, I got the attention of a manager at one of the auditions. After countless auditions, I was called to the ‘Magnificent Century: Kosem’ audition. Zeynep Gunay Tan came to the audition and said ‘OK’ in the room while I was still there. I cannot forget my excitement at that time. I even left my belongings in the room where the shooting took place and walked out with suprise. My career started this way and now continues with “The Game of My Destiny”.
Have you always been handsome like now?
I have always been at peace with myself, even when I was 120 kilos in the high school. I had no problem with the man I was looking at the mirror. I was at peace but I was a little lazy. I thought it was time to take care of my health and show the determination. That’s why I decided to loose weight. I gained a habit of sports and balanced nutrition during that time.
Everybody finds you sexy. How do you find yourself?
Praise is as dangerous as critics. Maybe that’s the reason of my distant stance. I do not shape my feelings about myself based on outside comments. When I look at the mirror, I am not afraid of enjoying my different colors.
Do you believe in destiny?
Yes. It depends on how we define destiny.
How do you define destiny?
Our life scenario, which tries to teach us the lessons necessary to fill the gap inside us and repeatedly brings these lessons before us in different ways until we learn. A life scenario, which leaves us free about our choices but holds us responsible for its consequences.
You have been dating with Sandra Pestemalciyan for 5 years. How did your popularity affect your relationship?
I had to stay in Mardin for almost three years because of my previous job Hercai. Being away and changing things so quickly in my life has brought a serious test for my relationship. At this point, we have a much stronger and more meaningful relationship because we can go through this whole process by supporting each other without ever letting go of each other’s hands.
What are your ambitions apart from acting?
People and life. I have a very serious passion for life, people and relationships. Acting actually gives us the opportunity to enter the depths of man, to explore the situations that life presents and to examine relationships in detail. Acting only gives me a functional tool to experience these passions.
What do your friends want to change about you?
I may be stubborn. Sometimes, I can be obsessively stubborn and it makes me lose my resilience against life. My friends sometimes try to comfort me by saying, “Relax, relax.”
Are you angry?
I have some red lines including disrespect, injustice, negligence, and the exploitation of goodwill and labor. I can get angry when my red lines are touched.
Thank you for the good laughs you gave me playing Miran Aslanbey. My wife couldn’t stop comparing me to Miran and all his yelling, have to admit I sometimes do the same thing. 😆😆😆 Much blessings to you and your family. I pray everyone is well, especially in this tough time in Turkey.
