From the interview with Ozge Torer

Can we hear your story? We know that you have been selected from many candidates for the role of Bala Hatun and that it is your first professional job. How did this process develop?

It was very sudden, but it was a challenging process. When I was studying for my bachelor’s, I came to Istanbul to make a connection. I was attending workshops and training. In fact, it was all about discovering myself and taking a step into the industry. Then I came across Bala Hatun’s audition. When the audition came, it was a very tough audition. Luckily, the summer break from my school gave me some relief. I wanted it so badly. There were also other auditions at that moment. I got a phone call and I said, “How, I don’t believe it.” I even didn’t believe that I got the role until the end of the first season. From there, I progressed slowly, started to learn, and improved myself.

On the one hand, it is very good that your first acting role is with a very good production like The Ottoman (Kurulus Osman). On the other hand, it is a difficult start because of the costumes, riding a horse, and using a sword. How are your thoughts about this?

That’s what attracted me. It was realistic that the character was so alive in this story. I wanted it so wholeheartedly, I admit it. That’s why I embraced it so much. I tried to do what I could. And you’re not just acting there. You have other physical activities, you have other efforts, but at the same time, our conditions are difficult. Yes, we have a very nice atmosphere and our story is really good. The story takes place in the 1300s, so you can act as much as you want without knowing the history, they all have math. It was actually difficult to set them up first. After that, when we were already united, it worked well.

The series has been taking very high ratings with each episode. What kind of reactions do you get on the street?

I have been receiving very good reactions from my close circle. The set is busy. When there is no set, I spend my time with theoretical training of that historical period. That’s why I don’t go out much. When I leave, of course, there are people who recognize me on the street. I am proud and mature to have the chance to practice the profession I dream of.

In the series, you use a sword and ride a horse. What kind of training did you receive?

We are working with a production that is equivalent to Hollywood. I took lessons in horse riding, arrow shooting, and sword handling for months from a choreography team of Bozdağ Film.

How is it working with Burak Özçivit?

Burak Özçivit is a very professional actor, a good partner, but above all a good person. It never made me feel like it was my first job. He was there for me both in terms of technicalities and acting. He always shared his experience and knowledge with me.
