From the Interview with Ogun Kaptanoglu

Before acting, you started your career as a TV presenter. What was the turning point in your career?

Yes, my first experience was as a television show host. If there is a time that I can call a turning point, I can say that it is the movie Kardan Adamlar that we shot in 2007 and the series ‘Behind Bars’ that followed it.

In addition to being a licensed basketball player and award-winning swimmer, I learned that you are freediving, horseback riding, taking fighting lessons, professional mountaineering, and motorcycle enthusiasts. How do you manage to be so versatile?

My sports life has always been active. There are branches in which I have been successful, I have won good degrees and medals. From a young age, I have always been interested in extreme sports. A long time ago, it became my lifestyle rather than a hobby. I love sports and lifestyle full of adventure and adrenaline.

You went to the Balkans and Northern Europe with your motorbike. Are there other places you'd like to go?

The Balkans is a wonderful geography, I love it very much. On my trip to Northern Europe, I traveled 16 countries with 11 thousand km of driving. I went to Norway, the northern country in Europe, a trip I cannot forget. I would like to repeat this journey through different routes. There are so many places I want to go.

You presented the opening and closing programs of the 16th International Izmir Short Film Festival. Have you had any experience as a presenter before?

4.5 years ago, I presented the Yesilcam Awards night in Istanbul. We had very valuable artists. I was very excited because all the big names were in front of us. Frankly, it is difficult to try not to make mistakes in front of such a community.

I guess there isn't a lot of excitement in front of the cameras because you're normally modeling and acting. Is there a difference between them?

Of course there is. When you make a mistake in the series, you can cut it and reshoot it, but you don’t have that chance as a presenter. Every word that comes out of your mouth, the intonation, the way of address, and the ability to speak Turkish properly determine your quality in that job.

Can you tell us about your life in Izmir before acting?

In 1993, when I was at the end of my high school years, I was doing professional sports in Izmir. I was a licensed athlete in basketball and a medalist in swimming. I gave catwalk technical walking lessons for 5 years at Safak Fisek Agency. In 1995-1996, I was presenting a morning program called “Good Morning Sky” on Sky TV, the local television of Izmir. My first live broadcast experience was with that program. It took 1.5 years. After that, I presented a motor sport program on the same channel. Then I got some offers of commercials.

Is there a role you'd like to play?

I would love to portray a visually disabled person. Al Pacino’s 1992 film “The Scent of a Woman” is the greatest guide for me. After watching that movie many times, when I woke up in the morning, I put on my eye patch and prepared breakfast for myself. I tried to do my daily chores at home. Like a visually impaired citizen, I entered a store in Karşıyaka. I tried on a few outfits. People helped me down the stairs. I left the store and walked to the end of Karsiyaka Bazaar and sat in a café there and drank coffee. I tested myself and as far as I could see, I was quite successful. Because I was able to convince everyone. If such a role comes one day, I would like to do it gladly and meticulously. These kinds of jobs are very difficult roles to handle. Strong characters that I want to make without thinking about my career.
